Angelina's early years
The daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina Jolie was born in Los Angeles, California.
Her ancestry is Slovak, German and French Canadian.
Angelina's god-parents are Jacqueline Bisset and Maximilian Schell.
When her parents were separated in 1976, Angelina nad her brother James Haven were raised by her mother.
Angelina says today that watching movies with her mother was what inspired her to become an actress.
At the age of 11, Angelina enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute, where she trained for two years and appeared in several stage productions.
She went to Beverly Hills High School and was often the target of teasing and abuse my her fellow students.
Angelina's mother survived on a modest income, and Jolie often wore second-hand clothes which was looked down upon by the children of some of the area's more affluent families.
As a child she was extremely thin, and for wore glasses and braces which did not help any.
Angelina was also despondent because her early attempts at modeling failed.
At the age of 14, she dropped out of her acting classes and wanted to become a funeral director. At this point she also dyed her hair purple and started wearing all black.
Angelina did eventually return to theater studies and graduated from high school.
